I was at the National hospital, a popular clinic in the Abuja metropolis a few days ago to visit a sick friend when I witnessed my first death scene. An old man who I perceived had a heart problem was about to give up the ghost when he said these words, “Life is so beautiful” and then drew his last breath. His last words had me pondering for several hours, what really makes life so beautiful?
Is it about acquiring a beautiful house or buying a fleet of cars, travelling round the world or having a perfect family, being successful at your genre of work or becoming a popular and powerful celebrity during your lifetime? All these and more I asked myself, totally forgetting the fact I came to see a sick friend until I finally came to a conclusion.
Although spiritualists and religious folks may have another point of view, what really makes life so beautiful is the irony we experience in it every day. The irony that while some people are enjoying the comfort of their homes, others are on their way to the hospital for one problem or another. The irony that while some believe Christ is Lord, others believe Allah is Supreme. The irony that while some eat in plenty, others barely eat once a day. The irony that while it’s raining cats and dogs in one area, the sun is shining like all hell’s loose in another. The irony that celebrities work hard for most of their life to become well known, then wear dark glasses and carry bodyguards to avoid being recognized. Sometimes we tend to ignore these things because we are blinded by what we assume to be the ‘good’ life but these are really what make life so beautiful.
